POSITION SUMMARY:
The HVAC Mechanic in the Maintenance Department of Valdosta City Schools is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, and upgrading of HVAC systems across district facilities. Key duties include diagnosing and addressing HVAC issues, performing preventive maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety and HVAC codes, and collaborating with other skilled trades. The mechanic will also maintain an inventory of tools and materials, ensuring they are available for timely work completion.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of continuing education toward license/certification in HVAC trade; valid Georgia driver’s license, clean driving record, and evidence of insurability; Freon handling certificate; minimum of 2 years of experience in HVAC maintenance; Universal EPA Refrigeration Certificate; electrical experience; energy management system skills. Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired. The HVAC Mechanic has a physically strenuous and demanding job. Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolds, indoors or outdoors, is required. All employees must be able to pass a criminal background check.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates with the assigned supervisor for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
- Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and/or replacement needs.
- Fabricates equipment parts for the purpose of meeting specialty needs and/or replacing unavailable parts. Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action, and/or complying with building and safety regulations.
- Inspects HVAC systems and their components (heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs, and recommending preventive maintenance.
- Installs heating and air conditioning equipment and systems for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities.
- Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned, for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance as needed for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of HVAC systems.
- Prepares written materials (repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
- Repairs heating and air conditioning systems and/or components (pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coils, piping, digital and pneumatic controls, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a comfortable work environment.
- Request equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring the availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.
- Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and mechanical issues.
- Transports a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Position will include other trades such as Plumbing; must be proficient in piping skills of PVC, copper iron or willing to learn through on the job training; plumbing scope of work may include repairing active sewer lines; Electrical; proficiency skills must include conduit installation, low voltage systems; intercom, fire alarm, burglar alarms, irrigation controls and scoreboard repair; Welding and Cutting; must be proficient in gas, mig and stick welding, sheet metal and black/iron fabrication. Must be willing to participate in all the above trades and other assigned tasks.

- Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
- Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
- Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
- Must perform routine physical activities such as bending, lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
Salary Range:
$34,595-51,357 based on years of experience.
