POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bus Monitor plays a critical role in ensuring the safe transportation of special needs students to and from designated locations. In addition to assisting students during their commute, the Bus Monitor may also serve as a substitute bus driver when necessary.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent.  They must be able to pass the annual physical examination and they are required to hold a valid Commercial Driver's License. CPR & First Aid certification is preferred.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists driver and students in operation of lifts for wheelchairs and assists disabled students.
  2. Secures special equipment that may accompany students.
  3. Stays alert to any conditions in the loading and unloading of students that may present a danger to the students.
  4. Follows all internal procedures for alerting the appropriate staff of any medical or behavioral situations with students.
  5. Communicates in a positive manner with the driver, parents, students, teachers, and other district employees.
  6. Has a physical examination completed by a registered physician prior to the beginning of each school year.  Drivers/Monitors must use physician contracted by the district. 
  7. Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.
  8. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Transportation and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Students while transporting them.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to work well with bus drivers, school administrative teams, and district office leaders.
  2. Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.
  3. Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  4. Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  5. Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  6. Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  7. Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  8. Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
