POSITION SUMMARY:

The Elementary Art Teacher is responsible for providing students with a comprehensive, standards-based visual arts education in alignment with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Visual Arts (P-5). This position fosters creativity and artistic expression by engaging students in creating, presenting, responding, and connecting through various artistic media, techniques, and concepts. The teacher will create a positive and inclusive learning environment, differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs, and integrate visual arts with other subject areas when appropriate.  This position plays a vital role in fostering artistic literacy, critical thinking, and creative expression in young learners, helping them develop a lifelong appreciation for the visual arts.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree in Art Education or a related field from an accredited college or university is required, along with a valid Georgia teaching certificate in a field approved by GaPSC (or eligibile for certification). Candidates should have a strong understanding of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Visual Arts (P-5) and best practices in elementary art instruction. Effective classroom management, communication, and organizational skills are essential for creating a positive and engaging learning environment. Preferred candidates will have experience leading student art exhibitions, incorporating digital media, and using a variety of artistic techniques to foster student creativity.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Visual Arts (P-5), ensuring students experience artmaking, analysis, and reflection.
  2. Teach fundamental art concepts such as the elements of art (line, shape, color, form, space, texture, and value) and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity).
  3. Foster student creativity through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital media, and other visual art forms.
  4. Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and engaging art classroom environment that encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and artistic growth.
  5. Manage and maintain art materials, tools, and resources to facilitate hands-on learning experiences.
  6. Plan and display student artwork throughout the school and coordinate school-wide art showcases, exhibits, and community engagement opportunities.
  7. Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments based on GSE Visual Arts Standards, providing feedback to students and parents.
  8. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with special needs and English learners.
  9. Use a variety of instructional strategies to support different learning styles and abilities.
  10. Work collaboratively with colleagues, school leadership, and parents to support student learning and promote the visual arts program.
  11. Participate in professional learning opportunities to stay current with best practices in art education and Georgia state requirements.
  12. Integrate visual arts with other subjects when appropriate to enhance cross-curricular learning. 
  13. Ensure compliance with school policies, state regulations, and federal laws.
  14. Maintain accurate records of students’ grades, attendance, and other required documentation.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Students, paraprofessionals, and volunteers.

  4. Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  5. Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  6. Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  7. Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  8. Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
