JOB DESCRIPTION:  Behavior Specialist 

CONTRACT TERMS:  190-day calendar 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

SALARY RANGE:  Social Circle City School District certified salary schedule

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT:  Exempt

 

JOB SUMMARY:

To use teaching, leadership, coaching, supervisory and consulting skills established for the purpose of                        effecting positive behavioral change in students; providing supportive behavioral interventions and                   support to student at the primary and elementary schools; assisting and supporting building administrators with behavioral incidents during the school day, and complying with State and Federal regulations and procedures. Serves in the capacity of a substitute teacher in the absence of a classroom teacher or paraprofessional.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

 

 
  • Educational Level:  Minimum Bachelor Degree is required.
 
  • Certification/License: Valid Georgia teaching certificate issued by the GaPSC with required in-field certifications and/or endorsements.
 
  • Experience and Skills:  3-5 years teaching experience 
 
  • Experience in teaching special education and/or experience working with students with behavioral difficulties on an individual basis preferred
 
  • Knowledge of PK-5 curriculum and instruction
 
  • Understanding of PBIS and other positive behavioral strategies
 
  • Coaching/Consultative experience preferred
 
  • Ability to lead, organize and motivate others
 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
  • Interact in a professional manner with all staff, students and parents.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Model correct use of language, oral and written.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and reports.
  • Assist the school district in developing interventions, functional behavior assessments (FBA) and behavior intervention plans (BIP) for the purpose of providing a safe and effective educational environment for students with challenging behaviors.
  • Develop and implement procedures and training for staff involved with students with challenging behaviors for the purpose of enhancing programs for students and ensuring that program operations are in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Conduct workshops, training, in-service presentations, etc. in classroom management techniques, FBA/BIPs, date collection, PBIS, and other topics for the purpose of developing skills and establishing effective relationships with behaviorally or emotionally challenged students.
  • Coach school system staff on methods for effectively teaching and working with behaviorally or emotionally challenged students.
  • Submit reports, assigned paperwork and other assignments on time, neat, legible and accurate.
  • Provide guidance and support as a behavioral expert.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administrators
  • Knowledge of and willingness to be trained to use Mindset de escalation techniques.

 

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of computers
  • Possess working knowledge of business office routines and expectations.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to carry out student restraint procedures according to guidelines provided in training.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. 

     

    Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing.  The ability to

    lift up to 30 pounds.
