OVERALL PURPOSE:
The job of the Bus Monitor is to support safe and efficient student transportation services by assisting students during transportation; supporting bus drivers in maintaining safe riding conditions; monitoring student behavior; assisting students with disabilities and specialized transportation needs; and ensuring compliance with district transportation procedures and safety requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education
- High School Diploma / Equivalent.
- Experience
- Experience working with children or students with disabilities.
- Experience in school transportation, childcare, or related service environments.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications may be appropriate and acceptable.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Knowledge of student safety practices and transportation procedures.
- Knowledge of basic behavior management strategies.
- Knowledge of specialized transportation equipment, including wheelchair lifts, restraints, and securement systems.
- Ability to follow transportation safety procedures and emergency protocols.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, drivers, and school personnel.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
Student Safety & Supervision
- Assists in maintaining a safe and orderly environment on assigned buses.
- Monitors student behavior during transportation and reports concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Assists students in safely loading and unloading buses.
- Ensures students are released only to authorized personnel when required.
- Assists students during transportation-related emergencies and evacuation procedures.
Support for Students with Disabilities
- Assists students with disabilities and other students requiring specialized transportation services.
- Secures wheelchairs, mobility devices, seat belts, child safety restraints, and other adaptive equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists students with boarding, exiting, and riding the bus safely.
- Monitors students with specialized medical, behavioral, or transportation needs during transport.
- Supports the implementation of transportation accommodations identified by student service plans.
Transportation Operations
- Assists bus drivers in maintaining safe and efficient transportation operations.
- Conducts visual inspections of assigned seating, securement devices, and safety equipment before and during transportation routes.
- Maintains the cleanliness and organization of assigned vehicles.
- Reports vehicle concerns, equipment issues, safety hazards, and transportation incidents to supervisors.
Documentation & Communication
- Documents incidents, student concerns, accidents, injuries, behavioral issues, and other transportation-related events.
- Maintains accurate records and reports as required.
- Communicates effectively with transportation staff, school personnel, and families regarding transportation concerns.
- Reports suspected safety concerns or emergencies immediately to appropriate personnel.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participates in required transportation meetings, safety training, and professional development activities.
- Maintains required certifications and training.
- Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
- Ensures adherence to transportation safety procedures.
- Follows federal and state laws, Board policies, and district procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Coordinates and assists with the district transportation training program, collision investigations, safety programs, student management, drug and alcohol testing, bus driver performance evaluations, and staff development.
- Coordinates with bus maintenance staff to prepare for annual state bus inspections.
- Collaborates with a variety of personnel from other departments, districts, state agencies, and organizations relating to pupil transportation.
- Establishes and monitors work assignments and work schedules.
- Develops and implements an effective procedure for maintaining maintenance records.
- Ensures the security of the facility, equipment, and supplies.
- Provides clerical assistance to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Maintains CBI (Community-Based Instruction) trips and equipment for Elementary, Middle, and High School
- Assists in scheduling any trips (field and athletic)
- Queries all newly hired drivers for FMCSA and queries all other drivers annually.
- Trains all new drivers.
- Trains special education drivers and monitors on procedures for transporting students with special needs.
- Complete and maintain all state-mandated reports.
- Complete and maintain all driver reports and records (i.e., MVR reports, skills evaluations, bus evacuation drills)
- Fill in as a sub driver when regular drivers are absent.
- Performs other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require standing, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting. The employee must be capable of assisting students during emergency evacuations and lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds in emergencies.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and varying environmental conditions associated with student transportation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION & TRAINING:
- Participates in required transportation safety training.
- Attends required district meetings and professional learning activities.
- Completes all required state and district transportation training.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations of classified staff.
CLEARANCES:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint
- Background Clearance
- Required transportation physical examination in accordance with state and district requirements.
