JOB DESCRIPTION:  Middle School Teacher (Grades 7-8)

CONTRACT TERMS:  190-Day Calendar

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

SALARY SCHEDULE:  SCCS District Certified Salary Schedule

Fair Labor Standards Act:  Exempt

OVERALL PURPOSE:

The job of the Middle School Teacher is to provide standards-based instruction aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence; create a learning environment that supports student engagement, growth, and achievement; use data to inform instructional decisions; and support the academic, social, and developmental needs of middle school students in accordance with district and state expectations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education
    • A valid Georgia Educator Certificate in the assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission.
  • Endorsements (Preferred):
    • ESOL and/or Gifted Endorsement preferred. Candidates may be required to obtain appropriate endorsements based on student population needs and district assignment
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of Georgia Standards of Excellence and content-specific curriculum.
  • Knowledge of middle grades instructional best practices and adolescent development.
  • Ability to design and deliver standards-based instruction using research-based strategies.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to analyze and use student data to guide instruction and intervention.
  • Ability to implement classroom management strategies that support a positive learning environment.
  • Ability to integrate technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:

Instruction & Planning

  • Delivers standards-based instruction aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence.
  • Plans and implements engaging lessons that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and student collaboration.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  • Differentiates instruction to support all students, including English Learners, gifted students, and students with disabilities.

 

Assessment & Data Use

  • Develops and administers formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning.
  • Analyzes student data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Provides timely and meaningful feedback to students.
  • Adjusts instruction based on student performance and progress.

Learning Environment & Classroom Management

  • Establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Implements classroom management strategies that promote positive behavior and engagement.
  • Builds positive relationships with students and fosters a supportive classroom culture.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborates with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to improve student learning.
  • Participates in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and school-based teams.
  • Communicates effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and needs.
  • Participates in Student Support Team (SST) meetings and IEP/504 processes as appropriate.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia.
  • Maintains required licenses, endorsements, and certifications.
  • Participates in professional learning and remains current on best practices.
  • Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
  • Ensures adherence to safety procedures.
  • Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies and district procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing.  

CONTINUING EDUCATION TRAINING:

Maintains all required licenses and certifications.

EVALUATION: 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System. (TKES)
