CONTRACT TERMS:  190-Day Calendar

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

SALARY SCHEDULE:  SCCS District Certified Salary Schedule

OVERALL PURPOSE:

The job of the Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is to provide standards-based literacy instruction aligned to the Georgia K–12 ELA Standards that promotes student engagement, critical thinking, and mastery of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills; develop students’ ability to analyze complex texts and communicate effectively using evidence; assess and monitor student progress; and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education
    • A valid Georgia Educator Certificate in English Language Arts (ELA) or related field as required by the Professional Standards Commission
  • Endorsements (Preferred):
    • ESOL and/or Gifted Endorsement preferred. Candidates may be required to obtain appropriate endorsements based on student population needs and district assignment
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of the Georgia K–12 ELA Standards, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and language domains.
  • Knowledge of structured literacy practices, including vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, and writing instruction.
  • Ability to support students in reading and analyzing complex literary and informational texts.
  • Ability to teach writing using evidence, organization, and clarity for multiple purposes and audiences.
  • Ability to analyze student literacy data and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:

  • Delivers standards-based instruction aligned to the Georgia K–12 ELA Standards across reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language domains.
  • Provides explicit instruction in comprehension, vocabulary, text analysis, and written expression using evidence from literary and informational texts.
  • Engages students in close reading of grade-level complex texts and supports analysis of theme, structure, author’s purpose, and use of evidence.
  • Teaches the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, for a variety of purposes (argumentative, informational, narrative).
  • Develops students’ ability to cite textual evidence to support analysis, reflection, and research.
  • Facilitates collaborative discussions and speaking/listening activities that promote critical thinking and effective communication.
  • Integrates grammar, usage, and language conventions into authentic reading and writing tasks.
  • Uses formative and summative assessments to monitor literacy development and guide instruction.
  • Analyzes student data to differentiate instruction and provide targeted interventions and supports.
  • Promotes student engagement through relevant, rigorous, and culturally responsive instructional practices.
  • Supports literacy across content areas by reinforcing reading and writing skills applicable to all disciplines.
  • Maintains an effective and safe classroom environment that supports student learning and engagement.
  • Integrates technology to enhance literacy instruction and student learning.
  • Compiles, maintains, and submits required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintains appropriate student behavior in accordance with district expectations.
  • Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
  • Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia.
  • Participates in professional learning and applies evidence-based literacy practices to improve instruction.
  • Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
  • Ensures adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
  • Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies and district procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing.

EVALUATION: 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System.  (TKES)
