CONTRACT TERMS:  190-Day Calendar

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal & Special Education Director

SALARY SCHEDULE:  SCCS Classified Salary Schedule  

  • Rank I -  Grade 2: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Rank II - Grade 4: 60+ Hrs college credits

Fair Labor Standards Act:  Non-exempt

OVERALL PURPOSE:

The job of the Special Education Paraprofessional is to assist teachers and support staff in providing instructional and behavioral support to students with disabilities; support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); and assist in maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:
    • Education level must be in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines
  • Certification:
    • Certification as mandated by the Professional Standards Commission
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Ability to support instructional strategies and classroom learning activities.
  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to follow teacher direction and implement instructional and behavioral strategies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, staff, and students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Strong organizational and teamwork skills.

ESSENTiAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:

  • Supports the classroom teacher in providing instructional opportunities for students.
  • Uses instructional strategies and techniques as directed by the teacher or appropriate personnel.
  • Provides support to selected students in resource and/or general education classroom settings.
  • Assists in implementing accommodations and supports outlined in student plans (IEPs, behavior plans, healthcare plans, etc.).
  • Assists students and teachers with hardware, software, and assistive technology.
  • Provides feedback to teachers regarding student performance and behaviors that may impact learning.
  • Conducts small-group or individual learning activities based on lesson plans developed by the teacher.
  • Assists with student assessments, grading assignments, and collecting data on student progress.
  • Assists with routine recordkeeping as directed by appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares instructional materials, including copying materials and preparing displays, learning centers, and manipulatives.
  • Locates, operates, and returns classroom equipment as needed.
  • Assists with maintaining classroom organization and housekeeping.
  • Assists with ordering and inventorying classroom materials and equipment.
  • Supervises students during classroom and school-wide activities as assigned.
  • Maintains required licenses, certificates, and credentials for the position.
  • Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in accordance with district guidelines.
  • Participates in professional learning and training opportunities to improve skills and effectiveness.
  • Reviews current developments, literature, and resources related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensures adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
  • Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies and district procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations of classified staff.
