JOB DESCRIPTION: Secondary Math Teacher
CONTRACT TERMS: 190-Day Calendar
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
SALARY SCHEDULE: SCCS District Certified Salary Schedule

OVERALL PURPOSE:
The job of the Secondary Mathematics Teacher is to provide standards-based mathematics instruction aligned to the Georgia K–12 Mathematics Standards that promotes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning; develop students’ ability to apply mathematics in real-world contexts; assess and monitor student progress; maintain a safe and supportive learning environment; and ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies and expectations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education
- A valid Georgia Educator Certificate in the assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission
- Endorsements (Preferred):
- ESOL and/or Gifted Endorsement preferred. Candidates may be required to obtain appropriate endorsements based on student population needs and district assignment.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Knowledge of the Georgia K–12 Mathematics Standards, including mathematical practices and content progressions.
- Ability to implement research-based instructional strategies that promote conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
- Ability to facilitate mathematical discourse and student reasoning.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including English Learners and gifted students.
- Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and families.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
- Delivers standards-based instruction aligned to the Georgia K–12 Mathematics Standards.
- Provides instruction that develops students’ conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application of mathematical concepts.
- Engages students in problem-solving, reasoning, and mathematical discourse using multiple representations and strategies.
- Facilitates students' exploration of mathematical concepts through inquiry-based, student-centered learning experiences.
- Supports students in making connections between mathematical ideas and real-world applications.
- Uses formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction.
- Analyzes student data to develop and adjust instructional strategies and interventions.
- Differentiates instruction to support diverse learners, including English Learners and gifted students.
- Implements appropriate instructional strategies, accommodations, and extensions aligned to ESOL and gifted best practices, as applicable.
- Integrates literacy and communication skills within mathematics instruction, including mathematical vocabulary and explanation of reasoning.
- Incorporates technology and digital tools to enhance mathematics instruction and student learning.
- Maintains an effective and safe classroom environment that supports student engagement and learning.
- Compiles, maintains, and submits required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintains appropriate student behavior in accordance with district expectations.
- Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
- Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia.
- Participates in professional learning and applies best practices to improve instruction.
- Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
- Ensures adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
- Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies and district procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing.
CONTINUING EDUCATION TRAINING:
Maintains all required licenses and certifications.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System. (TKES)
