Job Description : 

The essential function of the position within the organization is to direct student transportation services for the District. The position is responsible for supervising assigned staff, ensuring students arrive to school and home safely, overseeing bus fleet management, and performing related administrative and supervisory tasks as assigned. The position is also responsible for overall white fleet management, including overall inventory, purchasing, and maintenance. The position develops and implements programs within organizational policies; reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certification/license
    • Valid Georgia driver's license with a Passenger (P) endorsement and a School Bus (S) endorsement.
    • GA State Department of Education Trainer Certification (Ability to obtain these certifications within two years).
  • Work experience
    • 2 years of work experience preferred in K-12 transportation, military, transit or other form of transportation.

  • Directs all operations and personnel within the department; ensures personnel are in place to perform daily transportation of students to and from school. 
  • May be required to transport students to and from school and other events to ensure operations run smoothly. 
  • Supervises bus drivers and bus monitors and evaluates their performance. 
  • Coordinates the development of school bus routes. 
  • Monitors and evaluates bus routes and makes appropriate changes. 
  • Ensures that all buses are safe and in good mechanical condition and used effectively. 
  • Continually keeps abreast of changes and improvements in the transportation system that will contribute to greater safety. 
  • Investigates accidents and reviews parents’ concerns. 
  • Communicates with appropriate personnel concerning safe conditions along bus routes. 
  • Provides direct correspondence to parents and schools. 
  • Reviews onboard surveillance data for buses to ensure safety as the top priority for the District; coordinates student bus-related discipline issues with the driver and respective school administrator. 
  • Recommends applicants to the superintendent for employment. 
  • Authorizes and approves invoices and purchases in conjunction with contractual agreements.
  • Prepares necessary reports in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Recommends short-range and long-range goals for department improvement. 
  • Provides training and ensures staff follows proper safety policies and procedures established by the District, GDOE and the State Highway Patrol. 
  • Represents the transportation department at all required meetings. 
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies governing pupil transportation and ensures strict compliance of these by drivers, mechanics and other employees. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, supervisory, leadership, organizational and technology skills.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc).
  • Ability to work interdepartmental and in teams. 
  • Ability to make independent decisions; meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, other school administrators, parents, teachers, and students.
  • Ability to be articulate when making reports and presentations to the School Board or other organizations.

Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer.
Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. 
Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.
Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage stress.
Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities: Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed between various in-person working environments.
