QUALIFICATIONS:

Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN); current GA licensure required; CPR Certification.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as a health resource and liaison among students, staff, and guardians concerning health promotion and wellness.
  • Provide education and training to appropriate staff relative to Individualized Action Plans and identified health needs of students.
  • Prepare clinic for the opening of school according to the School Health Resource Manual.
  • Maintain medical supplies in clinic according to the medical supply list found in the School Health Resource Manual.
  • Maintain accurate, updated health information on each student after examining the Student Health Consent Forms.
  • Administer medication in accordance to guidelines set forth in the School Health Resource Manual.  Provide field trip medications as directed by the Field Trip Medication guidelines.
  • Assess situations and render appropriate care to students.
  • Provide limited, immediate short-term care to students with an injury or illness until parents or designated persons can be notified and assume responsibility for the sick or injured student.  These physical requirements include but are not limited to:
    • the ability to respond and attend to emergency situations that may occur throughout the facility in a timely manner
    • the ability to perform lifting, supporting and movement of students.
  • All nursing actions will be in accordance with the scope of practice of the Georgia Board of Nursing and Dawson County School District policies and procedures. 
  • Serve as contact resource person for hearing, vision, and scoliosis screenings and implement screening procedures as outlined by Nurse Supervisor.
  • Timely report communicable diseases and critical/emergency situations to the principal and Nurse Supervisor as required.
  • Refer chronic health conditions requiring medical procedures performed, as ordered by a physician, to the Nurse Supervisor.  The supervisor will initiate the process of establishing a plan of care.
  • Maintain daily documentations such as the Clinic Referral Form, Medication Administration Record, and any other reports or Flow Sheets as needed.  Perform and record medication counts as outlined in the District Medication Guidelines.
  • Maintain required monthly reports and forward to Nurse Supervisor. 
  • Attend continuing education updates and participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to school health.
  • Dispose properly of unused medications and sharps containers.
  • Maintain the dignity, privacy and confidentiality of students in accordance with The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act  (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines.
  • Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
  • Participate in training to increase the skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Implement and adhere to appropriate safety procedures and crisis emergency plans to create and sustain a secure and healthy learning environment consistent with district and school rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with federal and state laws, Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia, and established state and local policies, regulations, and practices.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents or guardians, district and school personnel, and other stakeholders in ways that enhance student learning.
  • Perform, professionally and efficiently, all other duties as assigned.
