Special Education Self-Contained Teacher

Position Summary

The Special Education Self-Contained Teacher is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities in a self-contained classroom setting. This teacher develops and implements IEPs, manages classroom behavior, and collaborates with staff and families to support students’ academic, social, and functional growth.

 


Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver differentiated instruction aligned with state standards and student IEP goals
  • Adapt curriculum, materials, and teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs
  • Provide direct instruction in academic, behavioral, social, and daily living skills
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional practices and interventions

IEP Development & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Collect and analyze data to track student progress toward goals
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with federal, state, and district guidelines
  • Participate in IEP meetings and communicate progress with families

Behavior Management

  • Implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Use positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies
  • Create a structured, safe, and supportive classroom environment
  • Teach replacement behaviors and social-emotional skills

Collaboration

  • Work closely with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and administrators
  • Provide guidance and supervision to paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs

 

Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Conduct formal and informal assessments
  • Use data to drive instruction and adjust interventions
  • Prepare progress reports and contribute to eligibility and reevaluation processes

 


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field 
  • Valid state teaching certification in Special Education
  • Experience working with students with moderate to severe/profound disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of IEP development, behavior management, and differentiated instruction

  • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive equipment (preferred)

  • Self-contained classroom serving students with varying disabilities (e.g., autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders)
  • May involve lifting, assisting with mobility, or personal care needs
  • Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and responsiveness
