Job Title: In-School Suspension (ISS) Teacher
Reports To: Principal/School Administrator

Job Summary:
The In-School Suspension Teacher is responsible for providing structured educational support to students assigned to the in-school suspension program. The role involves guiding students through online coursework, offering individualized instruction when needed, and maintaining a productive and respectful learning environment. Additionally, the ISS Teacher ensures that all aspects of the program are handled with confidentiality and professionalism, in accordance with school policies and legal requirements.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Hold or eligible for valid Georgia Teaching Certification; Professional certification preferred. Hold or eligible for valid Clearance Certificate issued by Professional Standards Commission
  • Experience teaching or working with students in a classroom or individualized setting.
  • Strong understanding of student behavioral management techniques and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Knowledge of online learning platforms, instructional technology, and the ability to guide students in completing online assignments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage students in a positive and productive manner.
  • Ability to provide individualized instruction to meet students' specific learning needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple students and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and structured environment in potentially challenging situations.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information responsibly.
  • Understanding of FERPA and other confidentiality regulations as they pertain to student records and behavior.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Instruction and Support

  • Guide students through online lessons and assignments, ensuring they understand the material and remain engaged.
  • Provide individualized instruction when necessary, offering additional help and clarification on assignments.
  • Monitor student progress, ensuring that students complete their work and meet academic expectations while in the ISS program.
  • Offer targeted academic support to help students succeed and address any gaps in learning.
  • Help students develop self-regulation, time management, and organizational skills while they are in the ISS program.

Behavioral Management and Student Guidance

  • Maintain a structured and supportive environment that promotes focus, respect, and accountability.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, offering guidance and support to help them improve both academically and behaviorally.
  • Utilize conflict resolution strategies to help students address behavioral issues and prevent further disruption.
  • Encourage students to reflect on their actions and work toward making positive changes in their behavior.

Confidentiality and Privacy

  • Ensure that all student-related information, including behavior and academic records, remains confidential and is handled with discretion.
  • Follow all school policies and legal requirements regarding confidentiality, including FERPA and other applicable regulations.
  • Respect and maintain the privacy of students’ personal and academic information, discussing it only with authorized personnel when appropriate.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the principal, counselors, and other school staff to monitor students’ behavior and academic progress.
  • Communicate effectively with parents or guardians regarding students' progress and any issues that arise during their time in the ISS program.
  • Participate in meetings with school staff to discuss strategies for student improvement and success.

Administrative Duties

  • Track and document students' progress, including the completion of assignments and any behavioral concerns.
  • Prepare reports as necessary for school administration and communicate with parents or guardians about students' participation in the ISS program.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and assignment completion during their time in the ISS program.
