POSITION: Teacher – Music
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Georgia Professional Certification preferred in Music Education (P-12)
RESPONSIBLE TO WHOM:
The building principal and/or other authorized administrators.
JOB GOAL:
To guide and direct students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and social growth and maturity through meaningful and engaging music education experiences.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Planning

Professional Knowledge. The teacher demonstrates an understanding of the music curriculum, content standards, musical pedagogy, and the developmental needs of students by planning relevant and inclusive music instruction.

Instructional Planning. The teacher uses the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Music and other district-approved resources to plan sequential, standards-based lessons that incorporate performance, listening, composition, and music literacy.
II. Instructional Delivery

Instructional Strategies. The teacher uses research-based and developmentally appropriate strategies to deliver engaging instruction in general music, instrumental and/or vocal music, and integrates technology and cross-curricular connections where applicable.

Differentiated Instruction. The teacher adapts instruction for a wide range of learners and experience levels, including students with no prior music background, and provides opportunities for creative expression through music.
III. Assessment of and for Learning

Assessment Strategies. The teacher uses formal and informal assessment methods to evaluate musical growth in areas such as pitch, rhythm, technique, and music literacy.

Assessment Uses. The teacher uses assessment data to inform instruction, provide constructive feedback, and support individual student progress in musical skill development.
IV. Learning Environment

Positive Learning Environment. The teacher fosters a welcoming and inclusive music classroom that encourages collaboration, creativity, and respect for diverse musical cultures and traditions.

Academically Challenging Environment. The teacher challenges students to develop musical proficiency through consistent practice, performance opportunities, and exposure to varied musical genres.
V. Professionalism and Communication

Professionalism. The teacher actively participates in professional learning specific to music education, contributes to school culture, and adheres to ethical and professional responsibilities.

Communication. The teacher maintains open communication with students, families, and school staff, and coordinates music events, performances, or programs that engage the school community.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues.

Interacts in a professional manner with students and parents.

Is available to students and parents for conferences according to system policies.

Facilitates home-school communication through conferences, communication folders, and performance updates.

Maintains confidentiality of students and records.

Collaborates with other music educators and staff to support school-wide programs.
B. Complies with school, system, and state administrative regulations and board of education policies.

Conducts assigned music classes at scheduled times.

Enforces classroom management practices to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment.

Is punctual and prepared for instruction.

Provides necessary resources and plans for a substitute when absent.

Maintains accurate documentation, including inventory of instruments and music materials.

Attends faculty meetings and music-specific professional development as required.

Adheres to contract expectations.
C. Models correct use of language, oral and written.
D. Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of music content, pedagogy, and performance standards.
E. Implements district-adopted music curriculum and integrates it into daily instruction.
F. Maintains organized lesson plans and instructional resources.
G. Assigns appropriate practice or listening activities to reinforce classroom learning.
H. Takes precautions to protect and maintain musical instruments, sound equipment, and materials.
I. Supervises students in a variety of settings including rehearsals, concerts, and field trips.
J. Coordinates and participates in school performances, concerts, and special events as needed.

As a teacher, you will have access to confidential information that must be handled with care and integrity. You will be responsible for safeguarding the privacy of both employees and students and adhering to confidentiality guidelines set forth by FERPA, HIPAA, and other legal requirements. This includes maintaining the privacy of personal records, assessment data, and any other district-related confidential materials. You are expected to handle all sensitive information with discretion and professionalism, ensuring that confidentiality is never compromised.
